An
electronic cigarette, also known as an e-cigarette or
e-cig, is a battery-powered device that provides inhaled doses of
nicotine by way of a vaporized solution. It is an alternative to
smoking tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. In
addition, this vapor also provides a flavor and physical
sensation similar to that of an inhaled tobacco smoke, while no
tobacco, smoke, or combustion is actually involved in the operation.

When
you puff (inhale) through the device, air flow is detected by a sensor,
which activates a heating element, called an atomizer, that
vaporizes a nicotine solution stored in the cartridge. An LED on the
opposite end of the device is also activated during inhalation, which
lets you know the cigarette is working, and flashes to let you know
when the battery needs recharging.
The
cartridges come in many flavors, with nicotine levels of H (High), M
(Medium), L (Low) and N (No Nicotine) available in most flavors. Both
Non-Menthol and Menthol flavors are available.
The battery is rechargeable (except in disposable units), and will generally need recharging after one or two cartridges have been used. The battery and atomizer have a life expectancy of about one year under normal use. Actual life of the units will vary by user and electronic cigarette model used.
